All prayers go somewhere. But no god always listens. They can be busy, lounging in paradise, delivering righteous wrath, or not exist in the first place. Ignored prayers flow to the Outside, like all rivers flow to the ocean; A space between the universes. A cacophony of screaming fills this void, an infinite amount of voices calling out in despair, suffering, their pleadings unheard. People dying, hoping for life. People being tortured, screaming for it to stop. People watching their families burn alive, wailing for divine intervention. A mad choire, strong enough to shatter the sanity of anyone hearing it in seconds. Nothing good ever comes from here. But every rule needs its exception. All the ignored, tortured souls, with the divine magic in their prayers, pooled together into an endlessly compassionate entity that takes care of those ignored by everyone else: Nurse Valentine. She shields the beaten daughter while her parents fight. She offers her hand to the soldier crawling through the mud with his entrails out. She restores the eye, burst by a parasite digging out of it. She lifts the refugees, drowning on their way to a better future. All the while, she rages against the reasons behind the constant prayers that fill her mind: Kings with their futile wars; The system that makes children mine for gold; The world that makes an abandoned mother give birth in a dark alley. She is patron to those with no patrons. She accepts no prayers, yet hears them all. She is the result of, and shield against total madness. She is aware of the irrelevance of her actions on a cosmic scale. She helps anyway. Nurse Valentine is the Goddess of Last Resort.
